Feng Shui Tips for your Baby’s Nursery & Children’s Rooms:
Creating Beauty, Harmony, Health & Tranquility

  1. Keep the room clean and uncluttered. Do not pile objects on the floor! This is draining and makes it hard for the child to sleep soundly. Less is more!

  2. Do a thorough cleaning at least monthly.

    1. Vacuum & dust.
    2. Clear all clutter.
    3. Burn white sage.
    4. Use an all-natural orange essential oil room spray to purify the space. Source: Any health food store or grocery store. Custom blends also available from Feng Shui Boston. www.FengShuiBoston.com
    5. Place small cups of sea salt in the 4 corners of the room for 3 days to purify the room & minimize nightmares. Rinse old salt down the sink! Do not reuse it! If your child has ongoing nightmares, keep 4 small cups of salt under the bed. Change cups of salt every 4 days.

  3. Open windows daily (even in the winter for short periods) to let in fresh air and vibrant life force.

  4. Incorporate fresh, crisp materials in the rooms such as white, airy curtains that let in light.

  5. Use all natural toys, cleaning products, bedding, furniture, and decorative accessories. Sources: www.communityplaythings.com; www.earlyshoolmaterials.com; www.lordequip.com; www.miabambini.com.

  6. Feed your child organic, natural foods.

  7. Use soft wall paint colors that are embracing, pure and freeing such as soft yellows, light salmon, pale greens. Avoid blues and colors that are too pink.

  8. Position your child’s crib or bed with a solid wall behind it’s back to provide solid support in his/her life.
    1. Place the crib/bed in a protected space diagonal to the door.
    2. Do not place crib/bed up against the window or directly across from the door.

  9. Line up your child’s crib/bed so the head points in one of their 4 favorable sleeping directions. Under www.FengShuiBoston.com, Look up "8 Mansions Formula" under "Feng Shui Advice". The "Personal Growth & Development" or "Health" direction is ideal for an infant. "Success" and "Love" directions are also favorable as the child gets older. It depends on your intention and needs of the child.

  10. Provide a solid foundation for your baby’s life. When your child is old enough for a bed, buy a bed made out of real wood with a solid, rounded headboard. Invest in a quality mattress and frame.
    1. Avoid all plastic, laminate, formaldehyde and cheap particleboard furniture.
    2. Do not place the mattress directly on the floor as the chi (life force energy) needs to circulate around your child to keep them healthy and well rested.
    3. Do not buy a bed with shelves behind the head.
    4. Bunk beds are NOT recommended. The child on top has no solid foundation and the one on the bottom always has a huge weight hanging over their head.

  11. Use solid or simple print sheets and bedding in soft colors of yellow, green or salmon. Avoid garish cartoon characters and action figures. Is it any wonder that your boys "can’t stop moving" when they are sleeping on planes, trains and automobiles?

    1. Use only 100% cotton bedding. When the child is old enough for a pillow, use only natural fiber pillows (Down, Wool, Cotton). NO polyester!
    2. Wash bedding in Dreft or detergents with no added fragrances.
    3. Do not use smelly fabric softeners or dryer sheets, as these are very irritating to the child’s skin.
    4. Change the sheets at least twice a week to keep chi fresh.

  12. Make sure no sharp furniture or exposed bookshelves are pointing at your child when they sleep. If so, move books towards the front to create a smooth surface or cover with curtains or doors. Cover sharp edges with table scarves or other natural fabrics.

  13. Incorporate artwork that is beautiful, vibrant and provides fun & fantasy. Images of children, dolphins, mermaids, angels and fairies are wonderful ways to stimulate the child’s imagination. Visit www.barefootbooks.com for some wonderful artist’s prints that are only $14.99/each. (As shown on Fox 25 special)

    1. Avoid bright neon colors.
    2. Avoid garish cartoon characters, action figures, violent images, monsters, TV characters or marketing posters.
    3. Think peaceful, soothing and tranquil.
    4. Ask yourself if the artwork you have chosen is a reflection of what you want to draw into your child’s life.

  14. Incorporate soft, rounded live plants and fresh flowers. When the child is older, teach them to water, nurture and care for the plant. Allow them to help you add a vase of fresh flowers on a weekly basis.
    1. Visit www.maripoisoncenter.com for a list of safe & poisonous plants. For maximum safety, keep all plants out of the reach of small children.
    2. For sunny windows, herbs such as mint are a safe choice.
    3. Jade plants, begonia, African violets are child safe plants & suitable from a feng shui perspective.
    4. Through out the entire home, avoid cactus (prickly relationships); bonsai (stunted growth); dried flowers (draining); ivy (poisonous and "out of control").

  15. Place round Austrian Crystal prisms in sunny windows to bring in "bubbles of joy", vibrant chi and beautiful rainbows. A positive side effect is that rooms with prisms have less of a tendency to accumulate clutter. Clear 20 or 30mm size are recommended for the windows. Aurora Borealis shells, starfish, moons, stars, fish and hearts are also wonderful. A wide variety of prisms are available from www.FengShuiBoston.com.

  16. Create a "Blessing Altar" in the Southeast corner of your child’s room to honor & bless your child with an abundance of love and support in their life. Suggested items:

    1. Altar Cloth (Silk shawls, bureau scarves or matching pillow cases work well)
    2. Safe plants and flowers (see #10)
    3. Photo of the Child’s family.
    4. Representation of God/Source/Spirit. (i.e., Angel)
    5. Austrian Crystal prisms depending on intention. Pink (love); Green (Health); Amber (Creativity & Support). Shapes can also be used: Hearts (Love); Stars & Moons (Dreams & Magic); Starfish (Abundance); Sea Shell (Protection).
    6. Create a Dream Box; ideally made out of wood. On small strips of paper, write the hopes & dreams you have for your child. Sign & date your dreams. Read to child when older and ask them to add their own dreams that you can write for them. Add to it continuously. This is a wonderful keepsake and sets powerful intentions for your child’s life.

  17. Place natural crystals such as Citrine and Amethyst clusters or tumbled stones on the windowsills in multiples of 8 for to stimulate education & knowledge and blessings.

  18. Incorporate natural room sprays daily such as lemon or orange (100% natural essential oil room sprays) to keep the energy clean, vibrant, circulating & fresh. Do not use synthetic fragrances. Custom aromatherapy blends are available from www.FengShuiBoston.com

  19. Do not place water fountains in your child’s room or play music incorporating water/ocean sounds when your child is sleeping. It represents "drowning out the good things in life" and is overwhelming. Water fountains and aquariums are wonderful in the living room or dining room: North (Smooth Life Journey), East (Family Harmony & Health), and Southeast (Wealth) parts of the room.

  20. Make sure there are systems in place to keep the room well organized. Use natural material baskets to store toys and books. Limit the number of toys in the child’s room.

  21. Avoid electronics in the child’s room including computers, Televisions, VCRs and stereo systems. They emit unhealthy levels of EMFs (electromagnetic fields), which have been linked to increased incidences of cancer.

  22. Honor your children. When they are old enough, let them pick out their own paint colors, artwork and decorative accessories. It is their personal sanctuary to rest, rejuvenate and dream.

How to Conduct a Blessing Ceremony for your Baby’s Nursery
  1. Place a table in the center of the Nursery.
  2. Place an altar cloth that has been purchased specifically for the altar/sacred ceremonies. (Do not use a tablecloth that you have eaten from).

  3. Have all family members represented on the altar with a photo or other personal object.

  4. Place items that represent the baby that you want blessed and want to include later in the baby’s own personal "Blessing Altar" in the Southeast corner of the nursery. (See tips on Feng Shui for a Nursery).

  5. Place a white tall pillar candle on a beautiful plate in the middle of the altar surrounded by flowers.

  6. Include items that represent God/Goddess/Source/Spirit, Saints or Angels. This could be a beautiful clear, round prism.

  7. Have all family members stand in a circle around the altar. If the baby is born, have someone hold the baby.

  8. Light the Candle.

  9. Speaking from the heart, call God/Goddess to shine down light and pour into the nursery, home and child:
    1. The truth and blessings of the universe.
    2. To Light the Child’s Path & Divine Mission
    3. To bring purpose, compassion & love into the life of the child.

  10. Have each family member offer a Gift of Words and blessings for the child, speaking from their heart.

  11. Blow out the candle. Save it for the "Renewal Blessing Ceremony."

  12. Place the blessed objects for the baby on the "Blessing Altar" in the Southeast part of the nursery.

  13. Begin a new Annual Sacred Tradition. On the baby’s birthday, conduct a "Renewal Blessing Ceremony", including the original objects on the altar. Like an energetic scrapbook, this will renew the joy, hopes and dreams for the child. Use the same white pillar candle each year.
