Feng Shui Boston > Feng Shui > The 8 Mansions Formula
The 8 Mansions Formula is another powerful tool you can use in your feng shui practice. You have a Personal Set of favorable directions to face that will attract greater Career Success, Wealth, Love, Health, and Personal Growth!
Application of this powerful 8 Mansions formula can often make an immediate and dramatic difference in your life! There are 100’s of ways to use this powerful formula in your life. Here are a few examples...
You also have a Personal Set of Unfavorable Directions. Facing these directions when eating, working, and sleeping may lead to accidents, illness, job loss; business failure; missed opportunities, failed relationships and financial problems. Avoid them!
To determine your personal set of directions, look at the calendar to determine your personal Kua Number based on your individual birth date.
Apply this formula when determining your eating, working and sleeping position!
When you are sleeping, position the crown of your head, when laying down (not your feet) pointing towards your favorable direction. In other words, place your headboard against the wall that is in your favored direction.
When sitting at your desk or dining room table, face or look at your favorable directions.
Important: You must also take into account the Annual "Flying Star" information when determining the most favorable directions for any given year. The Flying Stars formula overrides everything. This means that if a direction is normally favorable for you and it has afflicted flying star energy for the year, you will NOT want to face the " Annual Afflictions" such as the Grand Duke Jupiter, 5 yellows/misfortune, or illness. You will also want to make sure you never sit or sleep with the "3 Killings" behind your back.

The Lo Shu Square on the Turtle's back holds the key to feng shui and is the foundation for many feng shui formulas including The 8 Life Aspirations, The 8 Mansions Formula & Flying Stars Feng Shui.

The Lo Shu Turtle, emerging from the River Lo with the Magic Square on its back
Chinese literature dating from as early as 2800 BC tells the legend of The "Lo Shu Magic Square" or "scroll of the river Lo".
Roughly 3,000 years ago in ancient China, a great flood happened. The people, sensing that the river god ("Lo") was upset, tried to offer sacrifices to calm his anger. Each time they made an offering, a turtle would appear from the river. It had a curious figure/pattern on its shell; there were circular dots of numbers that were arranged in a three by three nine-grid pattern such that the sum of the numbers in each row, column and diagonal was the same: 15. This number was also equal to the number of days in each of the 24 cycles of the Chinese solar year. The people used this pattern to control the river. After studying these markings, they realized the correct amount of sacrifices to make was 15 and consequently, the river god was placated.
The legend of the Lo Shu Turtle is told in The Book of Rites, one of the five classical texts of ancient China.

This pattern is called a "Magic Square", in that each column and the two diagonals add up to the same number.
In a traditional Feng Shui Pakua (8 sided) Map, each number is related to a compass direction. This is the basis for The Life Aspirations Map as illustrated.
